MUNCIE — Ball State University is one of 13 recipients of grant money from the state's Skill UP Indiana! program.

Gov. Mike Pence and Steve Braun, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, announced on Wednesday the recipients of more than $11 million in funds from the program, which provides funds to community partnerships to develop training and education.

Ball State will receive $158,881 in grant funding with a $45,000 private match. According to the press release, the money "will be used to develop and implement evidence-based strategies that will result in a career and technical education 'crosswalk' program that includes up to nine dual credits in Residential Property Management (RPM) and will ultimately lead to a College-Career Pathway to skill up individuals for a career in RPM."

The press release from the state said that the goal of the Skill Up program is for the recipients to use grant funds to equip Hoosiers with the skills necessary to fill the 1 million jobs projected to be available over the next decade.
“Today, we take important steps toward closing the skills gap and empowering Hoosiers to obtain the skills to fill the in-demand careers of our workforce today and in the future,” Pence said in a statement. “Our Skill UP! Indiana grant program is just one facet of our broader strategy to further cement Indiana’s reputation throughout the nation as a state that works. With partnerships like these, we vow to put Indiana on track to be a global engine of commerce, ingenuity, investment and economic development.”

The Skill UP Indiana! grant program was created to encourage development of sector-focused training and education programs for in-demand occupations at the regional level, in order to teach the necessary skills and competencies as identified by local employers.

Industry partners with the Ball State program include those that make up the RPM Advisory Board, including Equity Residential, Edward Rose and Weidner Apartment Homes.
